Get insights to better understand the data economy for food systems!

The Data4Food2030 Monitor developed by ILVO, Wageningen University & Research, Netcompany Intrasoft and Lisbon Council, within the framework of the Horizon Europe project Data4Food2030 is now accessible at monitor.data4food2030.eu!

Why it is important to monitor the data economy for food systems

Data-driven innovation is transforming food systems. Monitoring what is happening enables us to act in an informed and targeted way. It can offer insights to help shape inclusive policies, enhance collaboration, and drive informed decision-making for a resilient and innovative food system. To take maximum advantage of this data driven innovation, food system stakeholders need to take additional steps towards higher data value and additional data valorisation. This requires even broader cooperation, which can be encouraged by applying new business models, making additional technology more widely available, and making new European data legislation understandable at sector-specific level. Food system stakeholders -value chain actors, farmers, policy makers, food companies, consumers- can use the Monitor for strategic insights into the data economy as the food system becomes more resilient, sustainable, and innovative.

The Monitor helps you to:

  • Identify agri-food digital market trends, focusing on interoperability, ethical considerations, and farmer data rights
  • Identify emerging technologies in agri-food (e.g. edge computing) and provide an overview of how often certain technologies are used and the available digital infrastructure across rural areas
  • Provide an overview of the laws, regulations and compliance related to the data economy for food systems
  • Look up Data Sharing Initiatives within different countries all over Europe, as examples of the data economy

An Evolving System for Collaboration

The Monitor gathers official statistics, information from literature reviews, papers and other research projects, automated web data, text mining insights, and stakeholder input from farmers, businesses, policymakers, and researchers to provide a comprehensive view of Europe’s Data Economy for Food Systems (DE4FS). By continuously integrating new data and enabling cross-sector partnerships, it ensures a dynamic and up-to-date resource for stakeholders.

What You Can Access

Food value chain actors can use the monitor to develop a digital strategy, assess potential risks, and identify growth opportunities. Meanwhile, food system stakeholders can utilise it to shape policies toward a fair and inclusive DE4FS, leveraging insights into country-level differences and key dimensions where significant gaps exist. If you are a data actor or operate in an adjacent sector, you can use the monitor to facilitate business-relevant decisions, explore market potential, identify gaps and opportunities, assess potential competition for future data products, or even seek collaboration opportunities. The Monitor provides nine key dimensions, including Data Information, Economy & Business, Technology, Legal, Environment, and Social & Ethics, for a holistic approach to data-driven decision-making.

Shape the Future with Data Sharing

Organisations are encouraged to register their Data Sharing Initiatives (DSI), enabling them to compare efforts, identify challenges, and collaborate across projects, sectors, and industries. By contributing to the platform, stakeholders enrich the knowledge base and drive innovation in Europe’s food systems.
