Stakeholder Dialogue

What are the perceptions and experiences of food system participants’ of the data economy and experiences in it?

This is what the latest infographic explores. Click on the link to learn more about the perceptions of more than 60 stakeholders from across Europe and what important steps need to be taken to create a fair, inclusiveness data economy for food systems.

The Data Economy and Society

Integrating societal impact is imperative for the successful development of the data economy for food systems which is why Data4Food2030’s approach includes four elements:

Anticipation

Anticipation

societal impacts will be considered from the beginning

Inclusiveness

Inclusiveness

input from all relevant stakeholders will be considered, not only the ‘main’ or ‘traditional’ actors

Reflexivity

Reflexivity

targeted processes will be used to gain the most insight possible from stakeholders and engage in the most meaningful discussions and exchange of ideas

Responsivity

Responsivity

innovators will consider multiple viewpoints from the full range of stakeholder groups

Stakeholder dialogue

Stakeholder involvement is essential to the project’s success as input will be used to define and validate the data economy for food systems, to create scenarios and develop policy recommendations.

The 9 Data4Food2030 case studies will provide the starting point for stakeholder dialogue as they represent various food systems sectors and different parts of the supply chain, geographical coverage in the EU, and status/maturity of the data platforms and cases, but will expand from there using secondary data sources (oral, written accounts), and momentum built through ecosystem expansion.

Stakeholder mapping will ensure stakeholders across the EU food system from research, policy, industry and civil society are represented and that all groups that are expected to influence the development of the Data Economy for Food Systems or can be affected by it are engaged.

For example:

Traditional stakeholders

input  suppliers, retailers, primary producers, consumer representatives, advisors

New stakeholders

waste industries, (public) health actors, media, advertisers, financial actors etc

Marginalised stakeholders

as a result of gender, socio-economic status, ethnic background, remote location

Traditional stakeholders

input  suppliers, retailers, primary producers, consumer representatives, advisors

New stakeholders

waste industries, (public) health actors, media, advertisers, financial actors etc

Marginalised stakeholders

as a result of gender, socio-economic status, ethnic background, remote location

From the map of stakeholders, 20 qualitative interviews, and multi-stakeholder focus groups of 50 participants will be used to inquire into their value, needs, interests and concerns related to the data economy. These findings will support the definition and conceptual framework of the data economy and ensure it reflects stakeholder opinions.

Scenarios and Policy Recommendations

Data4Food2030 will also create a set of different  stakeholders’ alternative future visions (positive and negative) of the data economy in agri-foods. These scenarios will be based upon the feedback from six participatory visioning workshops of  20 to 30 stakeholders of various groups identified during the mapping across different EU countries. The most urgent social, economic, ethical and legal gaps and challenges will be identified for 4-5 main scenarios and then by working backwards, 6 follow up workshops will be used to evaluate the scenarios and reflect upon the actions and interventions necessary to realise the preferred visions. Based upon this input, multiple pathways for regulators and policy makers will be delivered in the form of action plans and a concrete roadmap for improving and adapting policies that will stimulate the data economy for food systems. .
